Cook/Assistant Kitchen Manager
The Cook/Assistant Kitchen Manager will be an experienced and creative cook, assist with menu planning/preparation, local food sourcing, the execution of a smooth daily service, and kitchen cleaning and maintenance. Must have efficient food prep skills, experience with a scratch-made kitchen, a clear understanding of commercial kitchen workspace and sanitation protocol, be flexible, creative, and able to follow directions. Will be responsible for assisting kitchen staff on proper food preparation, sanitation and dishwashing procedures. The Cook/Assistant Kitchen Manager at Grace Café will be a team player, resourceful, creative, and actively promote Grace Café’s mission and have a positive attitude at all times. Grace Café is a nonprofit, pay-what-you-can community café with a joyful mission to end hunger and food insecurity in Danville and Boyle County.
Reports To: Head Cook/ Kitchen Manager
Status: Full-time, Hourly. Overtime eligible
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Some evenings and weekends required for fill-in and special events
Compensation: Range, $9-$12/hr. commensurate with experience. Compensation will be reevaluated annually on hire date anniversary
Benefits: Effective after a 90-day probationary period – Two weeks paid vacation (hourly rate x 80 hours) for the last week of the year and the first week of the year; 3 paid sick days annually; 3 paid bereavement days annually
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Assist with daily food prep according to the Head Cook’s guidelines and direction
Work the cold and hot line with the Head Cook during service. Accurately expedite incoming tickets and outgoing dishes
Work creatively with the Head Cook to create a seasonal, local, and daily changing menus
Restock all items as needed throughout shift
Label, wrap, date, and properly store all incoming food items and utilize appropriate stock rotation
Daily cleaning of the kitchen after service. Participate in weekly rotation cleaning of kitchen equipment – range, refrigerators, freezer, hood, etc.
Manage dishwashing protocol and proper sanitation. Wash dishes as needed and/or assist and manage/train dishwasher
Minimize waste, recycle whenever possible
Perform other duties as directed

A solid understanding of how a commercial kitchen operates, professional food prep and safe knife handling skills, and proper sanitation

A sense of humor
Must know how to cook and present a variety of different foods from scratch and with precision and excellence
High school diploma or equivalent
1 to 3 years prep or line cook experience
Complete the Boyle County Heath Department Food Safety Course or equivalent
